Russell wins regional Governor’s Cup
By KENNETH HART - The Independent
RUSSELL —
By uttering a single word, Claire Lyon triggered a wild celebration on Saturday.
That was because that word — Michelangelo — was the correct answer to the final question in the final match of the regional middle school Governor’s Cup quick recall tournament.
Lyon’s quick-trigger response — she buzzed in before moderator John Vanhoose had finished reading the question — gave her Russell Middle School team a hard-fought 32-31 victory over West Carter Middle School in the finals of the Quiz Bowl-style competition. Russell had trailed by as many as six in the contest.
Winning the quick recall tourney helped propel Russell to the overall regional Governor’s Cup title. Russell tallied a total of 28.5 points; West Middle was second with 24.5.
West advanced to the finals of the quick recall competition by beating Raceland-Worthington 42-25. West then defeated Russell 31-28. That forced an extra match, since Russell had only lost one previous meeting in the double-elimination tourney, as had West.
The matter of who came in first was somewhat academic — no pun intended — since both first- and second-place quick recall teams advance to the state Governor’s Cup finals March 15 through 17 in Louisville. However, Russell academic coach Melissa Clark said winning the title was a confidence-booster for her team heading into the state.
Additionally, regional champion teams generally enjoy more favorable seeding in the state tournament, Clark said.
West Middle coach Teena Liles said she was not the least disappointed with the outcome of Saturday’s competition.
“I could not be more proud of my students,” she said.
The matchup between West and Russell “was truly the best of the best in the region,” Liles said.
Up next in the Governor’s Cup competition are the high school regionals, which take place next weekend.
