Kevin England, son of Jeff and Lisa England of Ashland, has been named one of more than 2,600 candidates in the 2007 Presidential Scholars Program.
Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievement, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of 32 citizens appointed by the president, will make final selection of the scholars. One young man and one young woman from each state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. students living abroad and up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts will be selected.
The U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May.
England is a senior at Paul G. Blazer High School.

Jill Elizabeth Bradford of Ashland has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Bellarmine University in Louisville.
She is a freshman with an undecided major.

The following students were named to the dean’s list for the fall term at Transylvania University.
To be named, a student must achieve at least a 3.5 grade-point average during the term.
Emily Barker, daughter of Jack Barker of Lexington and Elizabeth Dillow of Flatwoods, is a sophomore.
Tyler Murphy, son of Mack and Verna Murphy of Flatwoods, is a freshman.
Both are graduates of Russell High School.
David Adams, son of James and Kathleen Adams of Ashland, is a senior biology major.
Valerie Ellis, daughter of Anthony and Vicki Ellis of Ashland, is an exercise science major.
Derrick Wyatt, son of Roy and Annette Wyatt of Catlettsburg, is a sophomore.
The are graduates of Boyd County High School.
John Hall, son of Charles and Elizabeth Hall of Ashland, is a junior history major.
Megan Messick, daughter of Timothy and Paige Messick of Ashland, is a sophomore.
Chelsea Salyer, daughter of Phillip and Tamra Salyer of Ashland, is a sophomore.
They are graduates of Paul G. Blazer High School.

Three students at Transylvania University recently returned from a winter tour with the Transylvania Choir.
Tyler Roe, a senior applied music major and a graduate of Boyd County High School, is a son of John and Carol Roe of Ashland.
Christopher Geiger, a junior psychology major and a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, is the son of Michael and Beverly Geiger of Newark, Del.
Rebecca Williams, daughter of Raymond and Margaret Williams of Worthington, is a junior Spanish language and literature and exercise science double major and a graduate of Raceland-Worthington High School.
They were part of the choir, which spent six days performing in six cities on a winter tour which included Tuscaloosa, Ala., Pensacola, Fla., Griffin, Ga., Atlanta, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Louisville.
The choir toured Austria, Hungary and the Transylvania region of Romania last May.
The choir is under the direction of Dr. Gary Anderson.
