They're back — 05/16/08

Warning: The tent caterpillars are back in large numbers in Kentucky. Horse breeders beware.Horse breeders are well aware of what happened in 2001, the last time the caterpillars built their tents in large numbers throughout the state. Almost 30 percent of the state’s thoroughbred foals were lost because of mare reproductive loss syndrome, which scientists attributed to the large number of tent caterpillars in the area. Other breeds of horses also were impacted.

Dottie Rambo — 05/15/08

Gospel music lost a real giant Sunday when Kentucky native Dottie Rambo, 74, died in the crash of her touring bus on Interstate 44 in Missouri. While the native of Madisonville and member of the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame is no longer with us, it is a certainty that the many songs she penned will be sung for generations to come.

Twenty years ago today — May 14, 1988 — a bus carrying a church group home from a day at King’s Island was struck by a drunken driver going the wrong way on Interstate 71 near Carrollton resulting in the deaths of 27 passengers on the bus, still the deadliest alcohol-related highway catastrophe in U.S. history.

Still a choice — 05/13/08

Politically, Hillary Clinton and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are far apart. But Senator Clinton — the wife of a former governor of Arkansas — is now playing the same role in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination as Huckabee did earlier this year in the race for the GOP nomination for president. And just as the final weeks of Huckabee’s campaign gave Republicans an opportunity to cast a vote in opposition to John McCain, the party’s certain nominee for president, Hillary Clinton is giving Democrats unhappy with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s near-certain nomination a chance to cast a protest vote.

Smaller increase — 05/12/08

The tuition increase for the state’s community and technical colleges, approved Friday by the Council on Postsecondary Education, is less than half of what the two-year commuter colleges requested. Michael McCall, president of the system that includes Ashland Community and Technical College, says that’s a bad thing, but students attending the schools — and their parents — likely will think its a good thing.

A sensible air safety bill that has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives has been grounded in the Senate. However, the reason for the bill’s apparent demise has nothing to do with air safety. Instead, the bill was thwarted by other unrelated provisions added to it.

Truly Tri-State — 05/10/08

Having a truly Tri-State bus system serving Ashland, Ironton, Huntington and points in between has been tried before without much success. However, with gasoline prices soaring to nearly $4 per gallon, the timing may be right for the launching of bus routes serving all three states. After all, with each increase in the price at the pump, taking the bus becomes a more appealing option.

When former Gov. Ernie Fletcher began his term in 2003, his new secretary of commerce — Ashland native Jim Host, the well-known and highly successful founder of Host Communications — vowed to make the state parks system self-sufficient, if not profitable. Through more efficient management, more aggressive marketing and higher prices, Host was convinced he could reverse the years — no, make that decades — of losses for the park system long billed as “the nation’s finest.”So was he successful? Not at all.

Looking for a quick and easy way to help feed the hungry? Just leave a few cans or boxes of non-perishable food by the mailbox Saturday morning. Before the end of the day, postal workers will help see that that food is in the hands of local agencies that help feed the hungry. In what has become a tradition on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, area members of the National Association of Letter Carriers again will be participating in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The Ashland Alliance and others involved in economic development in this community should send news of the latest contract between Kentucky Electric Steel and members of Local 7504 of the United Steelworkers of America to companies they are attempting to recruit. It should dispel any remaining perceptions that this is a tough labor town.
