City also baits owners of pets
The recent article about cat trapping in our neighborhood is an excellent example of city government intervening in a minor neighborhood issue and making matters much worse.
The article focused on animal trappings but a more important secondary issue was touched on and never fully examined.
The article stated that animal control officers recorded the discussion with Mr. Wilson and others but didn’t disclose it was without their knowledge. Ashland citizens should be aware of this fact when dealing with animal control.
I think the Boyd County Animal Shelter does a great job. I think our city animal control office could adopt a better philosophy and an open mind when investigating a problem in any area and do a little more homework before resorting to trapping other owners’ cats, maybe notify the neighborhood so that the offending stray cats are caught and properly adopted out if possible. Wouldn’t that be a better solution?
I don’t think the greater good is served when seeking punishment or retribution on any individual who doesn’t let their cats run at large and unfortunately was trapped by fresh tuna fish. All it proves is that cats like tuna fish. When a responsible pet owner picks up their animal so another animal would not be unnecessarily killed and then later is issued a citation and a court date, you have to wonder what are the goals of this department?
Baiting and trapping cats is a debatable issue but attempting to bait and trap Ashland citizens’ pet owners at their homes for criminal charges is intolerable.

Check facts before spreading rumors
Elections seem to bring out the best and worst in people. This one is no exception. Rumors are running wild. It seems those who spread lies have already made up their minds and don’t want to be confused by facts.
It’s only fair to check the facts before opening one's mouth or sending an e-mail to ascertain if what one is saying or writing has any validity. This is easily done by visiting the following Web sites: www.factcheck.org or www.snopes.com or www.urbanlegends.about.com, or www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/.
One or more of these will generally shed light on the truth. Please, for the sake of a healthy democracy we all need and must be well informed before we speak. Hearing what one believes does not make it true.
Verify it before repeating it. Rumors are more often than not lies.

McCain has flaws; Obama’s worse
Do you believe that Barack Obama has the experience and guts to direct the most powerful nation in the world? Or, do you believe his stances on taxes, abortion, foreign policy and energy will harm this nation?
As I watched Obama's acceptance speech on Thursday night, nothing new was uttered. Obama believes in class warfare by pitting the wealthy vs. the working class. He wants to raise taxes on the so-called wealthy citizens to pay for a government-run health care system. He wants our troops home before they finish the job.
John McCain has flaws, but Obama's flaws will become a gaping sore to America. What he is offering is not real change.
Demand change from your leaders. If they won't listen, vote them out. This November show the world who is the real boss and reject the flawed and failed policies of Barack Obama.
John Morris, Catlettsburg
Time in place is not what counts
What is sufficient experience? Recently Russia brutally invaded and subdued its tiny neighbor. The individual and combined experience of all the world’s leaders failed to effectively respond.
Time in place is not what counts. Successful leadership requires maturity, wisdom, courage and integrity.

McCain would fight evil with more evil
When Rick Warren asked John McCain at the Saddleback forum recently how he would handle “evil,” McCain, without thinking, quickly replied, “Defeat it.”
Terrorism is evil, but McCain doesn’t seem to understand that America’s invading and occupying Iraq was an evil act. McCain has a short fuse and I find his penchant for attempting to solve problems militarily a little scary.
Now, just how does he plan to defeat terrorism? Will terrorism go away once Osama bin Laden is found and put to death? Does John McCain, a Christian, really believe using evil means to fight evil terrorism is the Jesus way of overcoming evil?
