Churches helping combat addictions

Forget courage and heart when it comes to dealing with the stronghold addictions have on people. I’ve seen many courageous and determined men and women who had been sober for months, fall to their addictions repeatedly.

We need united communities. We need united churches. We need united people bold enough to take on this evil.

Those of us who have seen the effects of addictions can call it nothing but. I’ve seen mothers leave their infant child alone in an apartment to go buy drugs. I’ve seen fathers who had their children in the back seat while dealing dope. I’ve seen a newborn boy shake incessantly withdrawing from OxyCotin whose mother could not stop using despite the fact that she was carrying a child.

All the courage and heart in this world will not help these addicts. But there’s hope. Churches have unified. People have had enough and are starting to stand.

If you are somebody who wants to help those addicted or get your church involved, there’s a Living Free seminar July 25-26 at Heritage Free Will Baptist in Cannonsburg. For more information e-mail the church at htfwb@zoominternet.net.

A starting point for those addicted is a ministry called ENOUGH. It can be reached at enough@windstream.net or by calling (606) 474-2607 in Grayson, or e-mailing Heritage Free Will Baptist. If you need help, we’re here to show you were to find it.

11th annual July 4 parade planned

Ashland’s 11th annual Independence Day Parade, sponsored by Ashland Alliance and Summer Motion, will be at 5 p.m. Friday, July 4.

New for this year is the “Yankee Doodle Dandy Bicycle Decorating Contest”. Also featured during this year’s celebration is the 5th Annual “Fire Truck Contest” immediately preceding the parade at 3:30 p.m. Fire trucks from all area fire districts are invited to participate and be judged. The trophies will be presented during the parade.

Our Second Annual “Show & Shine” for all emergency responder vehicles also will be part of the activities. All emergency vehicles, including the fire trucks, will be located on Winchester Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets and the public is invited to come and inspect all vehicles.

The parade route will be similar to that of the Christmas parade except this parade will turn up 15th Street to Winchester Avenue and will continue only to 20th Street and Winchester.

The deadline for entering is Friday, June 27. If you or your organization is interested in taking part in the parade, or participating in the bicycle decorating contest, please call Paula Mayo, at the Ashland Alliance, (606) 324-5111.

What better time or place to show your patriotism and to honor our local heroes than Ashland’s 4th of July Parade?

Paula Mayo, Ashland Alliance, Ashland
