Fairview residents paying utility tax
By their voice and their votes, the residents of Westwood and the Fairview School District have elected not to pay a Kentucky State Gross Receipts Tax on their utilities.
This tax is also known as a school tax, utility tax, or utility levy. As board chairman, I urge district residents to thoroughly examine their utility bills. They are being charged this tax by several utility companies, namely Time Warner Cable, ATT Wireless, Sprint, and others.
Please understand that the Kentucky gross receipts tax Westwood residents are paying is not being sent to Fairview Independent Schools but is being sent to one of the other school districts in Boyd County. By their vote and their voice, district residents elected not to pay this tax because of financial hardships and other reasons — but they are paying it.
Please contact your legislator on this matter as the utility companies will not remove this tax from your billing. As a note of interest regarding Time Warner Cable, although each of us pays this tax on our bill, Time Warner does not charge the Fairview School System for its service. That’s a deal not unlike a school tax for us.
Please contact the Fairview Board of Education if you have any questions regarding this matter.

Campaign coverage is appreciated
Tons of thanks to the news media for their good coverage of the national presidential elections. They have shown the voters of America just how controlled the voting system in a national election is, and then the politicians have the audacity to tell us that our vote counts.
If we could just have one national election and no one voted for the incumbent, all we would have to do is sit back and watch how fast the politicians change in Washington for the people.
