Jesse Allen Clarke 1925-2012

GREENUP — Jesse Allen Clarke, born in Flatwoods, formerly of Boyd County, last residing in Proctorville, passed away on Nov. 14, 2012, one day shy of celebrating his 87th Birthday here on Earth. We can rest assured that he was celebrating it in Heaven with his wife of 59 1/2 years, Betty Ruth Shockey Clarke, having passed from this life on June 13, 2005, and his son, Danny, passing from this life on June 14, 2006. Celebrating with them for eternity are many loved ones and friends that welcomed Jesse to their fold.

Survivors include one son, Larry Ray Clarke of Proctorville, (formerly of Boyd County); a daughter-in-law, Carol Childers Clarke of Cannonsburg; a sister, Thelma Clarke Hayes of Maryland. He is also survived by a very special fishing and hunting partner, Bob Hammond of West Portsmouth, Ohio and several other family, extended family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Jesse was preceded in death by a son, Danny Allen Clarke of Cannonsburg; his parents, Ed and Bessie Fannin Clarke of Flatwoods; two sisters, Elzena Clarke Carter and Laura Clarke Ward; and five brothers Ralph Clarke, Earl Clarke, Eddie Clarke, Charles “Chuck” Clarke, and Virgil Clarke.

Preparing to enter his 25th year of retirement, Jesse loved to hunt and fish, regardless of seeing any prey or catching any fish. A bad day fishing or hunting was better than a good day of doing nothing. Jesse was a veteran of World War II, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, alongside his brother Eddie. During the battle of Iwo Jima, when the "Sara" was hit, Jesse was going topside to find his brother Eddie. He ran into Eddie, who was looking for him. Both were spared injury. Jesse retired from the construction business serving in several positions from co-owner of a company to many other positions.

Friends may call today one hour prior to the service starting at 1 p.m. at Caniff Funeral Home in Ashland, with services conducted by Joey Hammond of Sciotoville, Ohio.
