George Woodrow Hendricks - 1916-2012

RUSSELL — After 96 amazing revolutions around the sun, George “Windy” Hendricks has left Planet Earth to reunite with Mary Ellen and other much missed family and friends and begin a wonderful new adventure.

To those still completing this journey, he leaves a smile and a song and assurance he is no longer kicking, but is now flying high.

George Woodrow Hendricks was born July 11, 1916, to the late Dorris Fuqua and Elizabeth Ruth Rose-Hendricks of Russell. He attended Russell schools and graduated in 1935. George was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served honorably until 1945 through campaigns in Sicily, Northern Italy and Northern Africa. In 1942, he married Mary Ellen Fosson, the daughter of the late Albert and Eunice Chalkley-Fosson of Russell. He retired from the C&O Railroad, having filled various offices in the local union. Mr. Hendricks joined the Boy Scouts of America on his 12th birthday and became the first Eagle Scout in Greenup County, continuing as a registered Scouter all his adult life. He was a member of Smith Lodge 775, F&AM, and was a 33rd-degree Master Mason. He also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He was an active member of the churches where he lived, including Meade Memorial Methodist in Russell, First Baptist Church of Ashland and First Baptist Church of Flatwoods, where he served as choir director and deacon, and most recently, First Methodist Church in Lexington.

He joined his son in the first CPR class in Boyd County, taught lifesaving and CPR classes for many years and served on the PEASI Ambulance Board and the Russell Volunteer Fire Department. He sang with the Kentucky Kernels and as a volunteer at local nursing homes.

Following his retirement from the railroad, he worked for the Kentucky State Park System at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park as campground manager and senior trail guide.

Besides his mother and father, George was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen; three brothers, Richard M., Fuqua M. and James Dorris; and a sister, Sarah Elizabeth.

He leaves behind to mourn his passing a loving and caring family, including a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Shortridge (Frank) of Ashland; a son, Robert George Hendricks (Debra) of Georgetown; six grandchildren, Jennifer Tesh (Chris), Brenna Pearce (Brad), Kristin Hancock (Les), Emily Allen (Charles), Laura Marshall (Scotty) and Mariah Shortridge (Jessie); two stepgrandchildren, Ami Pack (Matt) and Jeff Shortridge (Tina); 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Ruth Farmer (David) of Kansas.

Funeral services will be at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Jennifer Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, with military honors by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, W.Va., and the West Virginia National Guard.

Visitation for family and friends will be today, Nov. 9, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m., and from 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be sent to the Boy Scouts of America or Community Hospice.

Condolences may be sent to carmanfuneral.com.
