Effie Miller Howard, 88, of Sandy Hook, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
Effie was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Elliott County, the daughter of the late Robert and Roxie Clevenger Miller.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Gleen Howard, on Jan. 16, 2012; a son, Michael E. Howard; and five brothers and sisters, Addie Earl Miller, Burns Miller, Frank Miller, Lillian Adkins and Joyce Mayse.
Effie had a very busy and fulfilling life. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a homemaker. During World War II, she worked in Chicago. In Dayton, Ohio, she worked at Rikes Department Store, and also worked as a medical assistant for two doctors, Dr. Frank Green and Dr. Mickey Green, in Sandy Hook. She was a former member of Eastern Star and belonged to the Elliott County Woman’s Club. She was a member of Sandy Hook United Methodist Church and attended Fannin Enterprise Baptist Church. Effie was a longtime caregiver to her husband, Elwood.
Effie is survived by two children, Barry Dean and wife Crystal Howard of Morehead and Michelle and husband Jim Ison of Sandy Hook; a daughter-in-law, Marcella Howard of Troy, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Kristen Van Norman, Seth Howard and wife Heather, Jamee Markwell and husband Joe, Holly Markwell and husband Jason, Kesha Ison, Hayden Howard and Chandler Howard; and her great-grandchildren, Claire and Caroline Van Norman, Brody Markwell and Brantley Markwell.
The family would like to extend its appreciation and gratitude to Effie’s caregivers.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook by Brother George Stafford. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.
