Martin E. “Gene” Kay 1924-2013

ASHLAND — Martin E. “Gene” Kay, 89, of Ashland, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 24, 2013, after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 17, 1924, in College Corner, Ind., a son of the late Gordon and Sylvia Pickle Kay, who resided in Bloomingdale, Ind. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Kay of Arcanum, Ohio; and a sister, Mary Cawein of Morrillton, Ark.

Martin’s faith in God and his love for life guided his decisions and was a great example to his family and friends. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Ashland and served in many capacities through the years.

Martin retired as a signal supervisor from CSX Railroad in 1984. He loved model railroading. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator on a B-24 bomber, flying 35 bombing missions out of Italy with the 460th Bombardment Group. He served stateside during the Korean conflict. He shared his strong love of country with many young people in the community during Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day programs. Gene had a big heart and loved helping people down on their luck from any walk of life and with great humility.

Martin was an avid sports fan and played basketball and ran track during his high school days. He coached the girls basketball team at Charles Russell Elementary for 10 years with much success. He loved to play golf and made two hole-in-ones. He was a member of the (Proc Haller) best ball group for many years and constructed a miniature golf course in his back yard for his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Marjory Kennedy “Bobbye” Kay of Ashland; daughters Sharon Holman and husband Jim of Newark, Ohio, and Stephane Wilson and husband Ken of Ashland; six grandchildren, Stephanie Tigner, Jimmy Holman and Andrea Holman of Newark, Scott Wilson of Grand Junction, Colo., and Sean Wilson and Shannon Daniels of Ashland; 10 great-grandchildren, Sierra Clark, Trey Tigner, Lacey Holman, Halley Holman and Jaxon Holman of Newark, Kourtney Wilson of Ashland and Trace Wilson, Ben Wilson, Matthew Wilson and Kaley Wilson of Flatwoods.
