Michael Dwane Carter 1948-2013

ASHLAND — Michael Dwane Carter, 64, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, in Jo-Lin Health Center in Ironton, surrounded by his loving family.

Michael was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of the late Gaston and Sibyl Moore Carter. In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by brothers Earl, Keith, Daniel, Jerry and Phillip Carter; and sisters Naomi Clark, Helen Erwin and Loretta Carter.

Mike was a Christian and attended the First Church of God in Ashland. He served as trustee for the Susannah Missionary Baptist Church. He earned an associate degree in business management from Huntington Junior College, was a lifetime member and served as commander for the D.A.V. Chapter 2, and was also a member of A.F.G.E 2344, Amvets and the American Legion. Mike served on a disaster relief team in the Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss., regions to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He retired from the VA Medical Center in Huntington with more than 25 years of service as an A/C mechanic and was also a certified backflow inspector and tester. Mike was a proud veteran and enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1968 and was honorably discharged in November 1970. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie Cooper Carter of Ashland; daughters, Michelle Curry of Fort Myers, Fla., Stephanie Helms and husband Lee of Chesapeake  and Anna Marie Carter of Ashland; stepson Austin Cooper Kelley of Ashland; sisters Delores Bias and husband, Vermal, of Ona, W.Va., Judy Ross and husband, Bill, of Ona, and Sharon Nance and husband, Joe, of Huntington; brothers Lloyd Carter and wife, Juanita, of Granite Falls, N.C., and Rodney Carter and wife. Elaine. of South Point; grandchildren Sydney, Ashlyn and Carson; in-laws, Clarence and Anna Cooper; a special grandmother, Juanita Gibson; brother-in-law, J.R. (Marilee) Cooper; sisters-in-law, Angela (the late Grant) Ramey and Tina (Pete) Leighty; and a host of extended family, friends, nieces and nephews.

Mike’s enjoyment in life was his wife and family. He loved socializing and spending time with his family whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed playing the guitar, listening to gospel music and watching his children’s sporting events. Mike was a polite, caring and thoughtful man and always had a gorgeous smile on his face.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Steve Harris. Burial will be in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County with full military honors by the West Virginia Honor Guard and American Legion Post 93 of Kenova.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 11:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Mike was a very devoted and loving husband to Stephanie and a kind and caring father to all four of his children. He will forever be deeply missed by all who knew him.
