Edward Clay Jr.

AKRON, OH — Edward Clay Jr., 84, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 15, 2012, after battling several illnesses with great courage and humility.

He was born in Ashland to Edward and Herma Clay. Edward served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1945 to 1949 and the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., where he was a plant manager of reclaimed rubber. He was a part of Goodyear International in the early 1960s. After retirement, he worked several years for Schulman Inc. as an engineering consultant. He attended The Chapel in Akron, where he served as an usher, conducted visitations and was a member of the Fellow Heirs Prayer Group and Bible Study. Ed was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. But most of all, Ed was devoted to his family and his wife, Polly. She was always in his heart and they are “together again.” He was giving and self-sacrificing, assisting others whenever needed. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Polly; his parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Anita Clay; a brother, Billie Clay; and a sister, Helen Rice.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra Manteghi, Sherry (Ed) Fogarty and Jennifer Naader; grandchildren Patrick Fogarty, Amir Manteghi and his bride-to-be, Heather Rose Hazen, Katie Fogarty and Jamila Naader; a brother, Frank Clay; sisters Wanda (Gene) Carter and Ella (Frank) Rolen; a brother-in-law, Sidney Rice; a sister-in-law, Genie Clay; and a brother-in-law, Bill (Marilyn) Rice.

Friends may call at Bacher Funeral Home, 3326 Manchester Road in Akron, Ohio, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, with services beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be in East Liberty Cemetery, with military honors by Firestone VFW Post 3383.

Donations may be sent in his memory to The Chapel’s Care Ministries, 135 Fir Hill, Akron, OH 44304-1561.

The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Atul Goswami and Summa Hospital for their care during his illness.
