Althea DeBord Neese - 1926-2011

JACKSONVILLE, FL — Althea DeBord Neese, 85, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Nashville and Greeneville, Tenn., will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Judge Charles Gelbert Neese, on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Maplewood Cemetery in Paris, Tenn. A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m.

Throughout her life, Althea was a ray of sunshine to all those who knew her. She was dearly loved in her many relationships as wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and will be terribly missed by all those she touched in her life. She was an avid antiques collector and a regular walker. She adored all young children and never missed an opportunity to show her affection to them.

Mrs. Neese was born Aug. 1, 1926, in Gregoryville, and passed away Dec. 15, 2011, in Jacksonville.

She was the daughter of the late Charles M. and Betty Catherine DeBord. She spent her formative years in Ashland, where she graduated from the local schools. She married Carson Davis Jr., and they had a daughter, Rhonda. Later, they divorced and she moved to Nashville with her daughter.

In Nashville, she was a member of McKendree Methodist Church and served for many years as secretary of the Tennessee Loyalmen’s Association, where she met  U.S. District Court Judge Charles Gelbert Neese and they married in 1970. She and Judge Neese lived in both Nashville and Greeneville, where Mrs. Neese was very active in many civic and charitable organizations. Judge Neese passed away in 1989, and a few years later Mrs. Neese moved to Jacksonville to live with her daughter and her family.

She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Richard P. Poirier Jr., and granddaughter Gabrielle DeBord Poirier, all of Washington, D.C., and Jacksonville; her grandson, Richard P. “Trey” Poirier III of Jacksonville; her sister, Joyce DeBord Bergquist of Dothan, Ala.; two stepsons, Charles Gelbert Neese Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Pegram, Tenn., and Gerry Neese of Jackson, Tenn., and their children; and many loving nieces and nephews.

McEvoy Funeral Home in Paris, Tenn., is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests memorials be made in her memory to the International Foundation, Account No. 508-Honduras, 2145 24th St. N., Arlington, VA 22207, attn: Don Heyn.

This is a worthy ministry helping the poorest of the poor children and their families in the mountains of Honduras (wrgnews.com).
