Mildred C. Vaughan 1919-2013

ASHLAND — Mrs. Vaughan was born Nov. 2, 1919, and was raised in the coalfields of Harlan County, a daughter of Grant and Sarah Ellen Green McKnight. Mildred’s father wore many “hats” in the community. Mr. McKnight was a schoolteacher, preacher and stone mason. He had the rank of 3rd-degree master Mason in the Wallins, Ky., Lodge of Freemasons.

Mrs. Vaughan was a loving wife and mother, devoted Christian and a child of God all her life. She was a devoted and loving wife of the late Walton H. Vaughan forever and a loving mother forever of Michael and A.M.

Mildred was a registered nurse who received a nursing degree from Morehead State College in 1956. She also obtained a bachelor of science from the University of Miami in 1959, a master of art from Morehead State University in 1965 and specialist in education credentials from Barry University in 1988. She was named a Kentucky colonel in 1974. She taught elementary school until 75 years of age and was a 50-year pinned lifetime member of Order of the Eastern Star. She was a loving caregiver of several wonderful pets. In Mildred’s words, “To all my family and friends on both sides of my marriage to Walton, I will love you all forever.”

Left behind to cherish memories are Mildred and Walt’s sons, Mike Vaughan and A.M. Vaughan; Mildred’s brothers, Col. William (Lois) McKnight, John D. (Mary) McKnight, James (Helen) McKnight, Perry (Birdie) McKnight and Thomas (Orpha) McKnight; and sisters Myrtle and Hazel.

And again, “To all my family and friends on both sides of my marriage to Walton, I will love you all forever.”

A graveside service will be at noon Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland by the Rev. Kenneth Vaughan.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.
