Vernona G. Petre 1921-2013

CATLETTSBURG — Vernona G. Ferguson Petre, 91, of Catlettsburg, passed peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, May 7, 2013.

Mrs. Petre was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harry L. and Eva M. Lessard Ferguson. Her husband, Martin N. Petre, also preceded her in death.

Vernona was also preceded in death by 12 siblings.

She was a self-employed seamstress and an avid bridge player, playing every week. She was a faithful volunteer at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital for 33 years, logging in 8,000 hours as of April. She had many friends from the hospital and church; her neighbors were like family, too.

Surviving are her sister, Naomi Runyon of Catlettsburg; a niece, Robin Perri, whom she loved like a daughter; a nephew, Harry (Pam) Corr, whom she loved like a son; nieces Marge Stephen of Malala, Ore., and Dorothy (Tim) Beane of Richmond, Vt.; and nephews Bob (Cate) Corr of Campbell, Calif., Ken (Penny) Corr of San Lorenzo, Calif., and Matthew (Kerstin) Martin of Naperville, Ill., all loved.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland by Father John Noe.

Visitation for family and friends will be after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.
