ASHLAND — Jean B. Smith, 84, of Ashland, died Monday, May 6, 2013, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Jean was born Aug. 23, 1928, in Martin, a daughter of the late John B. and Nellie Chandler Brown.

Jean was a graduate of Ashland High School and a member of Oakland Independent Baptist Church in Ashland. Jean was a secretary for Dr. C.H. Parsons, was a clerk at the former TB Hospital in Ashland and was the first female clerk hired by Kentucky State Police.

Jean is survived by her husband, Ralph M. Smith of Ashland; a brother, Buell Brown of Ashland; and two nephews, Roger Brown of Ashland and Dr. Mark Brown and wife Dale of Hendersonville, N.C.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. James E. Pridemore.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Pallbearers will be Joey Barker, Silas Barker, Larry Senters, Robert Lewis and Bob Conley.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
