The Independent

ASHLAND — Emily Brennan Cratty Painter, 72, of Ashland, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, with her husband of 27 years, Richard, by her side.

She was born March 5, 1940, in Newark, Ohio, to Christine Brennan and her late father, Harold Brennan.

Emily was not a member of any given church, but she practiced her faith in tithing, and her love of God in everything she said and did in her life. As a young woman of 21, she left Ohio to move to California where she found work at Lockheed Aviation. She also worked at various administrative positions as an executive assistant until she remarried and moved to Ashland in 1987.

Emily was an extremely intelligent woman who cared about her country. She played an active role politically as much as she could, volunteering to work for the elections, working the polls and communicating with her representatives on problems that needed to be addressed. She had a quote she liked, “I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing.”

She was an avid newspaper reader, always trying to keep abreast of everyday happenings locally and nationwide. Emily had also volunteered at King’s Daughters Medical Center to help when and wherever she could. She was a caring, giving, compassionate, thoughtful and loving person who went beyond her family, but to her friends and anyone who needed her. You were indeed very fortunate to be her friend.

Emily was a lover of the outdoors, walking miles with her walking buddy, Dick, just sitting outdoors soaking up the sun or working in her flowers and shrubs.

She is survived by her much loved husband and companion, Richard “Dick” Painter; her son, Michael B. (Monique) Cratty of California; her daughter, Lisa Gipson of Colorado; five grandchildren, Nic, Cassi and Carly Cratty and Haylee and Logan Gipson; her mother, Christine Brennan; her sisters, Marcella (John) Wolfe and Christine (Donald) Dolen; and brothers Michael Brennan and Harold “Gordy” Brennan, all of Ohio; a sister, Heather (Richard) Rudbeck of Alabama; nine nephews; and five nieces.

Emily loved her husband, children and grandchildren. They were her heart, her soul and her life. That life will be celebrated by her family and friends with much love and many remembrances. She will be sadly missed.
