Charles T. Adkins - 1938-2014

ASHLAND — Charles T. “Bub” Adkins, 76, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Adkins was born Jan. 1, 1938, in Marion, Ohio, a son of the late Charles E. and Elsie Lucille Martin Adkins Waugh.

After growing up on the banks of the Ohio River, Charles served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, where he was awarded the Soldiers Metal for Bravery after risking his life to save the lives of two men.

Upon his return to Ashland, he became a firefighter for the Ashland Fire Department, where he was commissioned as a Kentucky colonel. He was also the owner of Adkins Home Remodeling for 40 years, building numerous homes and businesses throughout the Ashland area.

Charles also honored his country as a member of the American Legion. His greatest joys were spending time with family, painting and singing in church as a member of Prince of Peace Freewill Baptist Church in Westmoreland.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Verna Lou Gibbs Adkins; a brother, James Adkins; and a sister, Norma Rosenkrantz.

Survivors include his children, Virginia Denise Giles of Rogers, Ark., Martin Mitchell Adkins (Donna) of Alma, Ark., and Charles T. Adkins Jr. (Dianna) and Angela Michelle Rice, both of Ashland; brothers Kenneth Adkins (Diana) and Douglas Adkins (Laura), both of Ashland; a sister, Jerelene Arnette of Ashland; nine grandchildren; and a loving fiancée, Anna Butcher of Ceredo, W.Va.

Services to honor the life of Charles will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg by Pastor Phillip Warren. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Condolences may be sent to kilgorecollierfuneralhome.com.
