Ava “Louise” Napier - 1920-2013

FLATWOODS — Ava “Louise” Napier went to sleep in the arms of Jesus and our Heavenly Father on June 12, 2013, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods.

She was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Flatwoods, to the late Clarence and Goldie Hatfield, .

She will be fondly remembered for her warm and loving personality, her captivating smile and her ability to make everyone around her feel loved and appreciated. She never met a stranger, had the special ability to make everyone feel important and treated everyone as family. Louise loved quilting and shared her beautiful creations with friends and family, and was always ready to make a quilt to mark a special occasion. She baked the most delicious apple pies, all made with the most important ingredient, her love. Louise loved to be surrounded by beautiful flowers and enjoyed spending time outside working with them.

Louise left school at an early age and began her first job as a housekeeper, working for eight hours for $1 a day. She moved on to waitressing in several restaurants. She later left her beloved Flatwoods and moved to Akron, Ohio, where she worked for Firestone and Goodyear. While in Akron, she met her husband of 37 years, Elmer B. Napier. After returning to Flatwoods, she worked at Clayton Lambert in Ashland. She also worked in the cafeteria at McDowell School. Her most rewarding work that brought her the greatest joy was at the end of her career, where she spent time sitting with and befriending seniors. She was wonderful in this role, as she was there as friend, confidant and companion in their time of need. Louise had many activities that were very important to her, being a Sunday school teacher, class president, Cub Scout leader and PTA president. The most rewarding activity for her was raising three children and the joy of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, giving her five generations of family.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer B. Napier Sr.; her brother, Clifford Hatfield; a sister, Leatha Steed; brothers-in-law Cecil Trent, Lawrence Steed and Harry Richards; sister-in-law Molly Sue Cyrus Hatfield; sons-in-law Robert King and Joe Paul Gipson; a precious great-granddaughter, Julianne King; and a special friend, Thelma Scott Bradley, from whose loss she never recovered and left a great void in her life.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are sisters Shirley Trent of Ashland and Freda Richards of Landsdowne, Pa. She will be sadly missed by her deeply loved and treasured children, Celeita Joyce King of Orange Park, Fla., Anna Gipson of Flatwoods and E. (Donna) Burley Napier Jr. of Suffolk, Va.; her grandchildren, who were the light of her life, John Perry (Karne) of Matthews, N.C., Mitzi Perry of Middleburg, Fla.; Billy Joe (Christene) Gipson of Loveland, Colo.; Lisa (Steve) Potter and Lora (James) King of Ashland, Nathan (Laura) Napier of Minford, Ohio, and Crimson Pelfry of Carrollton, Va.; her great-grandchildren, Katherine and Michael Perry, Meghan Moellman, Aiden Gipson, Tabitha and Jacob Potter, Jocelyn King, Isaac, Lyla, Mark and Elliott Napier and Luke Pelfrey; her great-great-grandchildren, Mason and Brooke Moellman; a great-granddog, Daisi; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, with words of comfort spoken by Pastor James Wells and Pastor Jim Daniels. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Condolences may be sent to carmanfuneral.com.
