Dr. Willis Cruey Potter, 85, of Russell passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011 following an extended illness.
Willis was born Dec. 20, 1925, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Dr. Elijah Willis and Garnette Nell Miller Potter.
Willis proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. After the Navy, Willis graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and then obtained his dentistry degree from the University of Louisville. He set up his dental practice in downtown Russell and worked until he retired in 2001. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a former chairman of the Greenup County Board of Health, served on the Russell School Board, was a past president and 50 plus year member of the Eastern Kentucky Dental Association, a 50 plus year member of the Ashland Elks BPOE #944, past president and 50 plus year member of the Russell Rotary Club and a 47 year member of Smith Lodge #775 F&AM and a member of the American Legion. Willis was an avid fisherman and loved hunting and golfing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Earwood Potter and a brother, Ransford A. Potter.
Survivors include a son, David Willis Potter of Alexandria; a daughter, Lynn Allison DeFreitas of Rockledge, Fla.; and numerous friends and extended family.
Graveside service will be at noon Monday, March 14, 2011 by Pastor Don Young at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods with military rites by Ironton VFW Post #8850. After the burial, his children invite you to participate in a Celebration of Willis’ Life at Grace United Methodist Church in Raceland to share memories of him, his stories and laughter.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. An Elks service will be at 6 p.m. by members of Ashland Elks BPOE No. 350. Masonic service will at 8 p.m. by officers and brothers of Smith Lodge #975 F & AM.
