CATLETTSBURG — Sidney Logan Rice, 83, of Catlettsburg, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday evening, April 22, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Rice was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Logan, W.Va., a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Lillie Mae Barker Rice. Also preceding him in death was the love of his life and wife of 54 years, Helen Rose Clay Rice.

He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Buck Davis; brothers Wilson Rice and Thomas Rice; and sisters Opal Weber, Helen Margaret Stewart, Polly Ann Clay and Mary Ellen Rice.

 Sidney graduated from Thomas R. Brown High School, where he played basketball and football. He served his country honorably during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1989 from Ashland Oil Inc. as operations supervisor. He was a master gardener, a Kentucky colonel, a Kentucky admiral and a guest lecturer at the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University. He loved sharing the good news of Christ, and enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, sports, history and reading. Sid was passionate about telling stories from “the good old days.” He was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was a deacon.

Sidney is survived by his children: a son, Mark Rice and wife Donna of Ashland; three daughters, Theresa Kazee and husband Jack of Catlettsburg, Julie Riffe and husband Gary of Huntington, W.Va., and Lisa Coleman of Catlettsburg; eight grandchildren, Dr. Ryan Kazee (Allison), Andrew Brewer (Hannah), Hannah Brewer, Anna Coleman, Allison Coleman, Skyler Elswick (Aaron), Joe Riffe and Benjamin Riffe; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Billie Bo Rice (Marilyn) of Pensacola, Fla.

Funeral services to celebrate Mr. Rice’s life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Oakland Avenue Baptist Church in Catlettsburg. Pastor Mike Blankenship will bring a comforting message. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg and an before services Friday at the church.
