Dolores “Jean” McPeek Schmeisser, 74, of New Castle, Ind., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, in St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born Jan. 8, 1939, in Ashland, to the late Elijah and Hannah K. Patterson McPeek. She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Frank Damico.
She was formerly employed at the Ashland Daily Independent and had been a teacher’s aide at Greenstreet School in New Castle. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharist minister and Sunday religious education teacher and a member of the St. Anne Society and Mothers Club of St. Anne. Jean was also a member of the AARP, a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, a volunteer at Henry County Memorial Hospital and active in Bible Study Fellowship. She enjoyed being a grandma, gardening, reading, embroidery and pencil art. She never met a stranger.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Richard Schmeisser; her children, Barbara S. (Andrew) Schmeisser of New Mexico, Glen A. (Kelli) Schmeisser of rural Shelby County, Ind., and Gregory (Janet) Schmeisser of New Castle; five grandchildren, Kristen, Ross, Kate and Rebekah Schmeisser and Taylor Aldridge; a great-granddaughter, Aida Kellams; a sister, Garnet Marie Damico of Ashland; a niece, Mary Lisa Damico; and a great-nephew, Justin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at St. Anne Catholic Church in New Castle by Father Joe Rautenberg.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a prayer service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at the church. Private burial will be in St. Anne Cemetery.
