Alva Ray Markwell 1930-2013

ELLIOTT COUNTY — Alva Ray Markwell, 83, of Elliott County, passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 24, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Markwell was born May 16, 1930, in Elliott County, a son of the late Cecil and Maudie Belle Knipp Markwell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Sue Markwell; four brothers, Hazel Markwell, Willard Markwell, Milton R. Markwell and Willis Earl Markwell; two sisters, Nola Thornsberry and Veda Jewell Markwell; and one grandson, Kevin Markwell.

Ray was a Christian and attended the Grundy United Baptist Church. He retired as a machinist from CSX Railroad with 32 years of service. He also was the former owner of Markwell Trucking. He worked at Westinghouse in Mansfield, Ohio. He was a farmer and a school bus driver. Among his many activities, he enjoyed farming and spending time with his precious family.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Glenna Maggard Markwell; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ervin and Sandra Markwell of Olive Hill, Chester and Sheila Markwell of Olive Hill, Roger and Teresa Markwell of Sandy Hook and Logan and Stephanie Markwell of Olive Hill; four daughters and sons-in-law, Wilma and Lewis Leadingham of Olive Hill, Lenora and Ricky Lyons of Sandy Hook, Kathy and Richard Glancy of Grayson and Karen and Mattie DeHart of Olive Hill; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Tracy Markwell of Mansfield, Ohio, Louie Markwell of Morehead and Haskell and Violet Markwell of Olive Hill; one sister, Essie Risner of Sandy Hook; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in the chapel of the Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, with Brother Warren Vanover officiating. Burial will be in the Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m today, Sept. 27, 2013, and after 9 a.m Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jason Markwell, Joseph Markwell, Kenneth Markwell, Christopher Lewis, Chad Markwell and Ben Markwell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tanner Glancy, Samuel DeHart, Gabe Markwell, Justin Lyons and Nathan Davis.
