George H. “Hubie” Sloan - 1940-2013

LAVALETTE, WV — George H. “Hubie” Sloan, 73, of Lavalette, departed from his earthly home on Wednesday, April 17, 2013.

Mr. Sloan was born Feb. 12, 1940, in Catlettsburg, Ky., son of the late Oliver F. “Cobb” and the late Mary Louise Hayes Sloan.

George served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force where he was a communications specialist, a retired electrician and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He is survived by his wife, Starr Shanklin Sloan; children by marriage, Starr Skotnicki (Robert) of Pawleys Island, S.C., Angel Rife of Huntington and Jack Rife of Charleston; brother, Paul Franklin Sloan (Dee) of Pekin, Ill.; grandchildren, Tessa Lynne Rife, Rachel Jaye Rife and Jack–Tyler Creed Rife; nephews, Robert (Shelley) Sloan, Martin (Mo) Sloan and Kenneth Geyer, all of Ohio; and niece, Jennifer Sanders of Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marilynn Stewart.

The funeral for Mr. Sloan will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Brother Phil Richardson will offer words of comfort. Final rest will be in Catlettsburg Cemetery.
