Sonia Ward Holbrook, 74, formerly of Ashland, passed away June 13, 2013, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
She was born Jan. 25, 1939, in Ezel, a daughter of the late William Clifford and Mary Elizabeth Ward.
She grew up in Ezel and attended Morehead State College, graduating with a degree in elementary education in 1960. She was a dedicated teacher to students in Ohio and Kentucky, St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Orlando, Fla., where she retired after more than 40 years in the classroom.
Sonia was kind, caring and giving with a warm personality. She lived life to the fullest from the classroom to love for her family and to people she met along her life’s journey. She loved nature and all creatures great and small, including her dear cat, Max.
Her loving survivors include her son, Russell Ward Holbrook; daughter-in-law, Deana Holbrook; and grandchildren, Jack and Hannah Holbrook, all of Myrtle Beach; her former husband, Charles R. Holbrook III of Ashland; sister, Marcene and Marion Chestnut of Orlando; a niece, Diane and Jim Asher and their children, Benjamin Asher and Jocelyn Ashler of Bremerton, Wash.; several cousins; and a host of good friends.
A celebration of Sonia’s life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the Ezel United Presbyterian Church. Internment will be in the Ezel Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonia’s memory may be made to the Loaves and Fishes Fund, c/o Ezel United Presbyterian Church, 71 Presbyterian Church Road, Ezel, KY 41425. The fund is an ongoing program to feed the hungry children in the area.
