Dixie Evelyn Vanover, 81, of Rush, passed away Saturday morning, July 20, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born April 23, 1932, in Lincoln County, W.Va., to the late Alva Wilson and Helen Cartwright Whited. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, William Burkes; infant daughters, Donna Lynn Lucas and Connie Sue Lucas; brother Eugene Walden Wilson; and sister Bonnie Ashworth.
Dixie was always busy in the kitchen, feeding her family and many others as well. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Garner Missionary Baptist Church. Through the years she belonged to the Westwood Women’s Club, the Westwood Fire Department Women's Auxiliary, volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, and was always active in the lives of her children and in the community.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 43 years, Charles F. Vanover; children, Douglas A. Lucas and his wife, Connie, of Ashland, Marcella F. Evans and her husband, Tommy, of Ashland, Anita C. Watts of Rush and her significant other, Joey Rapier, of Paintsville, Joy Lucas of Rush and Billy E. Lucas and his wife, Debbie, of Catlettsburg; children by marriage, Sherylene Doolin and her husband, Charlie, of Summit, Rita Stewart and her husband, Mike, of Flatwoods, Richie Vanover and his wife, Venia, of Wurtland, and Nita Myers and her husband, Don, of Flatwoods; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Timmy Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Regina Culpepper of Olive Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate the life of Dixie will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the Garner Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Gary Arrington will officiate.
Visiting hours will be from noon until service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Klaiber Cemetery in Rush.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Garner Missionary Baptist Church, 19231 Ky. 3, Rush, KY 41168; or to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
