Doris Jean Terry - 1929-2013

CATLETTSBURG — Doris Jean Terry, 83, of Catlettsburg, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, following an extended illness.

Doris was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Charley and Mary Ann Polly Keesee.

Doris retired from Craycraft Foodland in Catlettsburg, in 2000, with 43 years of service.

She and her husband, Richard, became members of Catlettsburg Southside Church of the Nazarene shortly after its beginnings. They were married in the basement in 1955 before the current sanctuary was constructed.

Doris had served numerous positions in the church, such as Sunday school teacher, treasurer of the local Nazarene Missions International and church board member in the capacity of steward and secretary for many years. The church was Richard’s and Doris’s life. They came almost daily during their retirement years and worked in the church. Richard’s heart was the upkeep of the property while Doris loved working in the office, running bulletins, updating the marquee, weekly mailings to the shut-ins, updating the prayer chain or whatever else she could do to help.  She was loved by all of her church family and was known to many of the children as “Mamaw Terry.” Though Doris had no biological children of her own she was a mother and grandmother to many.

Doris and Richard had a deep love for missions and had traveled to other countries on Work and Witness Teams with their Nazarene District Family. She had a deep love for Mount Hope Camp in Flemingsburg, where she attended camp meetings and district events faithfully.

Doris was an avid UK basketball fan. Just Wednesday night in her hospital room she commented to those there, “Well we lost Tuesday night and not a one of you have said anything about it.” She also loved attending local sporting events where children from her church family were participating, sometimes traveling many miles to watch a game.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Richard Terry, on Jan. 17, 2011. It was hard to separate Richard and Doris, where you saw one you saw the other, and now they are together again. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Moore, Pal Mira Newsom and Sally Hulett; and five brothers, Jay, Henry, George, Lois Kenton and Frank.

In addition to her church family, she is survived by one brother, Daniel “Boone” Keesee of Tavares, Fla.; a niece who resided with her, Myra Jea’beth Hulett; and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Terry will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at the Catlettsburg Southside Nazarene Church with Pastor James H. Webster officiating. A committal service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Catlettsburg Southside Nazarene Church, Building Fund, 426 36th St., Catlettsburg, KY 41129. Doris desired to see completion of the current facility under construction.

Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Condolences may be sent to the family at kilgorecollierfuneralhome.com.
