Sally Adkins

GREENUP — Our dear, sweet mother passed into heaven on Wednesday morning, April 3, 2013. She was a teacher who never stopped teaching, a mother and grandmother who never stopped loving, a writer and poet who never stopped writing, a friend who never stopped helping and a card and board game player who never stopped playing. The Canasta decks are already being shuffled in heaven.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa., Sally moved to South Shore when she married in 1953. Sally was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clyde Adkins, in 2002, just before they could celebrate 50 years of marriage. Sally moved to Greenville in 2007 to be close to her youngest grandchild.

Sally absolutely loved her life in Kentucky and in South Carolina, but said often she couldn't wait to get to heaven someday, because she had been promised it would be even better than Earth, and that meant it had to be incredible. Our endless thanks to the many people who have offered prayers for Mom and our family, and who have reminded us on Facebook and by telephone of the incredible impact she had on their lives.

Our talented mother wrote her own epitaph, more beautifully and succinctly than we could ever imagine.

It does not matter where I lie —

’neath gravestone flat or metres high.

Just say I was. I laughed and cried;

was someone’s daughter, someone’s bride;

was someone’s mother, someone’s friend;

with such a precious time to spend;

gave what I could of talents giv’n,

and with love for life was driven.

I pray for all my progeny

that they should live so happily.

Sally leaves behind three blessed children, Cindy Adkins Roe of Smyrna, Tenn., Kurt Adkins of Houston, Texas, and Barbara Adkins Sease of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Lindsay Roe (world traveler), Jonathan Adkins of Arlington, Va., Kayla Roe of Smyrna, Allison Adkins of Williamsburg, Va., and Kyle Sease of Greenville; and her brother, Harry P. Meinhardt of Fayetteville, N.C.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Sunshine United Methodist Church on Ky. 7, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in her name to Furman University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at www2.furman.edu/sites/OLLI/CurrentOLLImembers/Pages/default.aspx to see Sally in a flowered sweater toasting ... something, or Trinity Presbyterian Church, 405 Wilhelm Winter St., Travelers Rest, SC 29690.
