ASHLAND — Betty Jo McDowell - 1927-2014

Betty Jo McDowell, 86, of Ky. 5, Ashland, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, in St. Mary's Medical Center, with her loving family at her bedside following a sudden illness.  

Betty Jo was born July 20, 1927, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Vernal and Lillian Martin Thompson.  

She faithfully attended Hoods Creek Enterprise Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship with her church family. She was an avid gardener and took advantage of every sunny day to tend to her flowers and yard gardening. She was retired from Russell K-Mart and Tri State Pediatrics.  

Betty Jo was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles E. McDowell; two brothers, James and Douglas Thompson; and two sisters, Pat Terrill and Dorothy Ferguson.  

She is survived by a son, Charles “Buzz” McDowell and wife Marge of Ashland; three daughters, Linda Fairchild and husband Calvin, Barbara “Bobbie” Fraley and husband Danny and Brenda VanHoose and husband Randy, all of Ashland; two sisters, Rae and Kay Thompson of Ashland; eight grandchildren, Denise and Brian Miller, Valerie and Todd Cumpston, Tina and Lennie Isaacs, Tracy and Chris Porter, Shawn and Tina McDowell, Kim and Micah Hicks, Rusty VanHoose  and Chas VanHoose; 11 great-grandchildren, Ryne and Caitlin Sallie, Emily Sallie, Craig, Alex, and Troy Cumpston, Shane Blackburn and Cade Isaacs, Kasey and Cole Hicks, Kayla McDowell, Skyler Porter, Savannah McDowell, and Chris Ringrose.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014,  by Brother Steve Fraley and Brother Tim Porter at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Visitation will be after noon Tuesday at the funeral home.
