Danny Dee Riley - 1940-2013

SOUTH POINT — Danny Dee Riley, 72, of South Point, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013, in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va.    

He was born July 31, 1940, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Herschel and Thelma Pemberton Riley.  

He was a 1958 graduate of Chesapeake High School where he was awarded “Male Athlete of the Year.”  He proudly served with courage and honor in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962. During his enlistment, he completed tours of duty in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, and was an instructor at Officer Training School for two years in Quantico, Va. He served as president, coach and mentor for South Point Youth Sports. In 2002, Danny retired from Aristech/Sunoco Chemicals in Haverhill, after 31 years of service. He was a Kentucky colonel and a member of the Marine Corps League detachment 340 in Huntington as well as the Honor Guard Commander at the American Legion Post 93 in Kenova, W.Va. Danny enjoyed helping his fellow veterans as a DAV driver for the VA Medical Center in Huntington where he had over 11,000 volunteer hours and logged 75,000 miles.  

Also preceding him in death was an infant son, Gregory Allen Riley; a brother, Dickie Riley; and a brother-in-law, J. Bernard Clark.  

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Janice Pack Riley; a daughter, Michelle Riley Boggs and husband James of Ashland; a son, Shawn Daniel Riley and fiancé Casey Spiller and her daughter, Jenna, of Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Mason and Danielle Boggs of Ashland; a sister, Barbara Clark of Chesapeake; and a host of friends and additional family.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.  

The funeral will be at 11 am Monday, April 8, 2013, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James Bolen and Elder Roger Maynard. Burial will follow at Sallie Smith Cemetery in Dunlow, W.Va.  

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
