June Leigh Halleck Kirk 1933-2013

ASHLAND — June Leigh Halleck Kirk was born to the late Algeon Lyle Halleck Sr. and Estelle Larch Halleck on April 14,1933, in Selma, Va.

Mrs. Kirk graduated from Ashland High School in 1950 and attended Ashland Junior College. She is survived by her loving husband Calvin “Miner” Kirk, whom she married in 1951.

Mrs. Kirk was a homemaker and co-owner of Miner’s Coins and Antiques. She was active in the community, volunteering as a Cub Scout den mother and for various fundraising campaigns such as the Cancer Crusade and the American Heart Association. She was honored as a Kentucky colonel for her community service.

Mrs. Kirk was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashland for more than 70 years, where she dedicated many years as a Sunday school teacher. She was an avid tennis player and a patron of the Ashland Tennis Center. Prior to her illness, she  was a member of the YMCA, where she enjoyed attending aerobics classes.  

The Kirks loved to dance, and a highlight of the summers in the ’50s and ’60s was the dances at Dreamland. She also loved spending time with friends at the Breezeland Swim Club from 1962 until its closure.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald B. Halleck and Algeon Lyle Halleck Jr.

Mrs. Kirk is also survived by four children, Mark of Ashland, David (Angie) of Sandy Hook, Leigh of Ashland and Scott (Darlene) of Cincinnati; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Chaplain Jimm Smedley. Interment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

A viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
