GREENUP — On Monday, May 13, 2013, Betty Lois Riggs Tolliver, 72, our beautiful mother of Smith Branch Road in Greenup, passed from this life and onto the next at her home.

Mrs. Tolliver was born Jan. 12, 1941, in Greenup, a daughter of the late Lowell and Orca Gillum Riggs.

She was a hard-working woman raised in the country. After graduating from McKell High School in 1958, she obtained a job with the FBI in Washington, D.C., where she worked in the fingerprint department until she married Willie Litewell Tolliver in January 1959. She gave birth to six children and kept busy by raising her children, gardening, raising cane, stripping tobacco and helping her husband build their home.

She believed in God and tried to always be truthful, honest and Christlike in her daily life. She loved art, poetry, books and getting together with her sisters and brothers. She attended Little Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church in Greenup.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Tolliver; a son, Willie Alexander Tolliver; two sisters, Phyllis Sanders and Clara Griffith; two brothers, Ray Riggs and Walter Riggs; and two great-grandchildren, Summer Nicole Tolliver and Joey Tolliver.

She is survived by four sons, Mitchell (Michele) Tolliver of Smith Branch, Greenup, Chris Tolliver of Flatwoods, Jason (Melanie) Tolliver of Wurtland and Nathan Tolliver of Wurtland; a daughter, Karmen (Chris) Burke of Greenup; two brothers, Stan (Connie) Riggs of Russell and James (Penny) Anthony Riggs of Wurtland; two sisters, Glenda Harris and Shirley Riggs, both of Greenup; five grandchildren of whom she was very proud, Sara Tolliver, Justin Tolliver, Josie Tolliver, Jeremy Nichols and William Tolliver; and a sister-in-law, Martha Riggs of Smith Branch, Greenup.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Kenneth Martin. Burial will be in Tolliver Family Cemetery in Greenup.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.
