William B. Cropper Sr. - 1921-2010

SOUTH PORTSMOUTH — William B. Cropper Sr., 89, of South Portsmouth, Ky., died Monday, June 7, 2010, at his residence on the farm he tended for 57 years.

He was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Lexington, Ky., a son of the late Clifton W. Cropper and Marie Bradford Cropper.

He was a farmer and schoolteacher. He was a former science, chemistry and physics teacher at McKell High School in South Shore, Ky., and Portsmouth High School and Notre Dame High School in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was a graduate of Henry Clay High School in Lexington. He received his bachelor of science and master’s degrees in animal husbandry from the University of Kentucky. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity at UK. He was a Kentucky colonel and a member of First United Methodist Church in South Shore, Ky. He served in the Navy in World War II, where he was in the Amphibious Forces that invaded North Africa. He also served on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nita McElhaney Cropper, whom  he married on June 5, 1948; children William B. Cropper Jr. of South Portsmouth, Gail (Robert) Swick of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Dwight R. Cropper of South Portsmouth; a grandson, William Harrell (Erica) Wood of Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Erin (Josef) Shewring of Columbus; three great-grandchildren, James B. Wood, Anna E. Wood and Katherine E. Shewring; and a brother, Charles A. (Joy) Cropper of DeLand, Fla.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Wade Cropper, and a sister, Carolyn Taylor.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore with Bill Hayden officiating. Burial will be on the family farm in South Portsmouth, with military graveside rites by James Flannery American Legion Post 276.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
