Lila Campbell Spillman 1921-2012

GREENUP — Lila Campbell Spillman, 91, died at 2:34 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, with her son, Doug, and her nephew, Eric Spillman, standing by her side as the angels returned her soul to God, who gave it.

Lila was born at Cherokee in Lawrence County, to Millard and Cora Adams Campbell. She had four brothers and three sisters, all whom preceded her in death. She was the oldest daughter, having only one older brother. She helped care for her younger siblings growing up. She had four additional siblings who died in infancy.

Some of her fondest stories were about growing up with her brothers and sisters on the family farm at Cherokee. Her life of hard work, discipline, love of family and love of God symbolized many of the traits of her Scots-Irish ancestors, who settled eastern Kentucky during the 1800s from Virginia.

The Lord helped her weather the death of her youngest sister in an auto accident at age 18 and her mother, age 56, and father, age 60, in a house fire, all within a nine-month period near Grayson in 1954.

Her husband, James Cleveland “Red” Spillman, died in 1996.

They sold the family farm homestead at Webbville and moved to Flatwoods in 1975 to be closer to medical facilities.

She is survived by three sons and a daughter, Jim Spillman (Connie) of Webbville, Bobby Spillman (Linda) of Titusville, Fla., Doug Spillman (Mary Ann) of Flatwoods and Lois Grossl (Bob) of Stamping Ground.

Lila is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A special great-grandchild, Molly Penn, died in an accident at about age 5 at Stamping Ground when she was struck by an automobile.

Typical of those growing up during the Depression years, she was very frugal when shopping, but gave abundantly to the needs of her children and grandchildren as she was able.

Lila was a Christian all her adult life and was a member of Oak Street Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Flatwoods.

In earlier years, she loved to quilt and can garden produce. She loved to do for her children and grandchildren. She was well-loved by her nieces and nephews and was visited by them on special occasions.

Her personality was characterized by a gracious quiet spirit with a quick determined independence when needed. This no doubt was partially molded in her earlier years growing up during the Depression with hard work and discipline with loving parents on the family farm.

On Sunday afternoon she was moved from ICU to OLBH to a room where she was able to see and communicate with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including a great-granddaughter 6 weeks old she had not seen. This brought much joy to her before her condition worsened.

Her funeral will be at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at 11 a.m., with the service conducted by her son, Doug Spillman. Piano selections will be provided by her granddaughter, Susan Spillman. Her grandsons and great-nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be beside her husband in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
