GRAYSON — Virginia Jean Shaffer Slone, 80, departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jean was born Dec. 4, 1933, at Stinson, to the late William Shaffer and Stella Hutchison Shaffer.

Jean was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of First Baptist Church of Grayson.  

She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Inger Stephens Slone.

Jean is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Allen Slone; a son, Jeffrey (Leslie) Slone; three daughters, Johnda Slone, Jeri (Quentin) Thomas and Jina (Dean) Tackett, all of Grayson; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Rebecca) Thomas of Lexington, Shae Thomas of Grayson, Gabe (Amanda) Slone of Louisville, Zack Slone of Morehead, Trei Tackett of Lexington and Madison Tackett of Grayson; a great-grandchild, Inger Grace Slone of Louisville, and anticipated birth of a great-grandson, Cooper Brooks Thomas (Lexington); a sister, Violet Bradley of Grayson; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Grayson by Paul Schmidt. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and sons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be Marcus Suttles, David Slone, Greg Slone and Wayne Stephens.
