Ruth Strother Littleton 1915-2014

CARTER — Ruth Strother Littleton, 98, of Grayson, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson.

She was born March 1, 1915, in Gregoryville, a daughter of the late Dr. J.W. and Agga Holbrook Strother.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Bliss Littleton, in 1989; two sons, George Richard Littleton and John Wickliff Littleton; a daughter, Ruth Isabell Williamson; a brother, Wick Strother; and three sisters, Gussie Gaines, Jessica Dysard and Belle Womack.

Mrs. Littleton was a 1930 graduate of Christian Normal Institute and a 1932 graduate of CNI Junior College in Grayson. She was a self-employed merchant who operated Littleton’s Grocery in Gregoryville and later was employed for a number of years as a bookkeeper, first with Grayson Milling Co. and later with Farmers’ Hardware.

Affectionately known to her family and friends as “Big Mom,” she was of the Christian faith and was a charter member of Gregoryville Christian Church, which she dearly loved. As a church member, she taught Sunday school class and was the church pianist for 45 years.  

Mrs. Littleton was an 80-plus-year member of the Gregoryville Homemakers Club and was a former board member of the Carter County Senior Citizens Center. She was instrumental in the expansion and relocation of Sparks Funeral Home to its present location.

Mrs. Littleton is survived by four daughters, Mary Sue (Curtis) Sparks of New Lebanon, Ohio, Janet Bliss (Clifford) Buck, Barbara Harris Marshall and Linda Lou (Ron) Arnett, all of Grayson; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 41 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends who will mourn her passing.

A celebration of life will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan.18, 2014, at Gregoryville Christian Church by Ron Arnett and Lewis Davis. Interment will be Sunday in Littleton Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Pallbearers will be George Sparks, Greg Sparks, John Buck, Jim Buck, Joe Buck, Jeff Buck, Tally Harris, Kevin Harris, Robert Williamson and Chris Arnett.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sparks Funeral Home of Grayson.
