Lucille Maureen Layne Craft 1921-2014

RUSSELL — Lucille Maureen Layne Craft departed this life while under the care of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell on Jan. 14, 2014.  

She was born Aug. 10, 1921, at Harold, to the late James Blaine and Ollie Hall Layne.  

She was the great-great-granddaughter of James Shannon Layne, who is one of the early pioneers of Floyd County.

Lucille was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Over the years she was active in church, both at Temple and other churches, as a Sunday school teacher and pianist, with a special emphasis on missions.

She was a homemaker all of her adult life. During World War II she served with Rosie’s Riveters in Willow Run, Mich., at the Willow Run Bomber Plant. During her married life she and her husband, James Pard Craft Sr., lived in Floyd County and Michigan. The last few years they resided in the Ashland area, where her husband worked for CSX.

She was also preceded in death by six siblings, Irene Elkins of Harold, Arthur Langdon Layne of Harold, Lenna “Lynn” Byrd Hubbard of Patriot, Ohio, Ottis Langley Layne Sr. of Catlettsburg, Mary Ozetta Lee of Harold and Anna Sue Clarke of Harold.  

She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Sue Mattingly (Tom) of Lexington; a son, James Pard Craft Jr. of Flatwoods; and a granddaughter, Aries Craft of Flatwoods.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Temple Baptist Church, 124 Reid St. in Flatwoods. Burial will be at a later date in the family cemetery at Harold.  

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Services will be under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home, 3526 Ky. 5 in Ashland.

Contributions may be sent in her memory to Temple Baptist Church, 124 Reid St., Flatwoods, KY 41139, designated for the church’s mission fund or the Gideons.
