Johnie M. Walls

SOUTH POINT — Johnie M. Walls, 75, died Friday, July 26, 2013, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

Mr. Walls is survived by his wife, Della; three children, Lisa Cremeans and husband Paul, Monty Walls and wife Melinda and Jonathan Walls and wife Krista.  He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren of whom he was very proud and spoke of daily; a brother, J.C. Walls and wife Sharon, a brother, Randall Walls and wife Sandy; and a sister, Judy Harmon.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Harriet Scott, and Charlene Lusk; a brother, Larry Walls; and a grandson, Michael Paul Cremeans.

The son of a coal miner, Johnie grew up in Logan County, W.Va. He was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served in the Vietnam War, retiring as a master sergeant. He received numerous awards, including the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service. All who knew Johnie would agree the discipline and patriotism he learned in the Air Force stuck with him throughout his entire life.

After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for 18 years at Armco/AK Steel in Ashland. He was an honorable Kentucky colonel and a member of Sybene Independent Missionary Baptist Church. In his later years, he enjoyed golfing, traveling to Tennessee and spending time with his friends at the Vietnam Support Group 16th Street Vets Center and VFW Post 9796, in Milton W.Va., as well as volunteering at the Ashland City Mission.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sybene Independent Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor D.L. Webb, with burial in Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, W.Va.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today, July 31, 2013, at the church.
