Gene Thurman Archey, 89, of Greenup, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Archey was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Greenup, a son of the late Ollie Pete and Noma Stephenson Archey.
He was retired from Armco Steel in Ashland.
He was a lifelong, humble and devoted servant to his community of Greenup.
He was a former mayor of Greenup, where he served three terms and also served on the Greenup City Council for 25-plus years.
He was a former president of the Greenup County Park Board and was a longtime park board member.
Mr. Archey also was a former Lions Club president, vice president and member of the board of directors.
He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow International Foundation for dedicated humanitarian services.
He was active in the Civilian Conservation Corp.
He was a U.S. Army World War II combat veteran.
He was in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he was a paratrooper and demolition specialist.
He loved to hunt, fish and play sports. He played ball until his late 60s.
Mr. Archey was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gene E. Archey; a granddaughter, Amy Cron; three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Norma Shoun Archey; three daughters, Karen (Paul) Ford of Wurtland, Robin Archey (Brooks) Callihan of Greenup, Mendy Archey of Raceland; two brothers, Kenneth Archey of Everett, Wash., and James (Marilyn) Archey of Greenup; a sister, Anna Hailey (Lee) Miller of Houston; five grandchildren Jason Erwin, whom he raised as a son, Mac Callihan, Katie Ford, Kami Ford and Alexia Callihan; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Bill (Donna) Shoun of Tulsa, Okla.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Pastor Glenn Stephenson. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
