Alfred E. Sanders 1938-2014

GREENUP — Alfred E. Sanders, 75, of Argillite, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

Alfred was born Sept. 14, 1938, in Greenup County, a son of the late Roscoe and Didama White Sanders. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Riggs Sanders; two brothers, Clifford Sanders and Frank Sanders; a sister, Josephine Harris; and two infant sisters.

Alfred was retired from the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He was a retired welder with CSX Railroad. He was a member of VFW Post 1168 in Greenup, Amvets in Greenup and American Legion Post 76 in Raceland.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Castle Cook Sanders; a son, Timothy (Patricia) Sanders of South Point, Ohio; a stepson, John (Jessie) Cook of Naples; a stepdaughter, Sandra (Richard) Mendez of Naples; three brothers, Curtis Sanders of Westerville, Ohio, and George Woodrow and Larry Woodrow, both of Troy, Ohio; three sisters, Irene Nichols of Wurtland, Maxine Gordon of Greenup and Florence Large of Greenup; seven grandchildren, Zachary Sanders, Missy (Jeff) Mendez Griffith, Jessicia Grubbs, Traci Jo (Steve) Mendez-Campbell, JD Cook, Richard (Mayra) Mendez II and Jenna Cook; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brian Coleman. A graveside service and burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County, with military rites by VFW Post 8850 of Ironton, Ohio.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
