Pauline D. Applegate 1926-2013

ASHLAND — Virginia Pauline D. Applegate, 86, of Yorktown, Ind., passed away early Thursday morning, March 21, 2013, in St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital surrounded by the love and admiration of her family.

She was born Oct. 19, 1926, to the Rev. E. Paul Diamond and Ethel Virginia Pickrell Diamond in Ashland. She graduated valedictorian of her August 1944 Ashland Senior High School class. Upon graduation she worked for Blaine Lewis, general agent, Reliance Life Insurance in Ashland.

In 1952, she moved to Indiana after her wedding on April 5, 1952, to Wilbur L. Applegate, who was from Yorktown. Once in Indiana she worked as a secretary to Selby Martin at Kennedy Insurance in Muncie and Wayne Dwyer at Dwyer Insurance in Yorktown. In March 1955 she began her career at Marsh Supermarkets, where she remained for 37 years. She retired as manager of the Marsh Employees Federal Credit Union on March 31, 1992.

Pauline was very active in the church music ministry for more than 60 years, playing the piano, organ, serving in her father’s church and assisting her husband with church choirs and programs. She was a very gifted musician who played for hundreds of weddings and other events. In addition, she served in her church as young people’s president, missionary president, board member and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Yorktown Church of the Nazarene and a former member and president of the Thrifty Thirty Home Economics Club. She was also very active in the lives of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She especially enjoyed family gatherings, decorating for Christmas, creating skits for the family and traveling back home to Ashland for visits.

In adddition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother; a sister-in-law, Anna Lou Ware; a brother-in-law, Charles Applegate; a sister-in-law, Sarah Belle Applegate; and a brother-in-law, Wade Slone.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbur L. Applegate of Yorktown, with whom she would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on April 5; a daughter, Debra P. Byrum of Muncie; a son, William B. Applegate of Yorktown; a grandson, Blake Tyler Byrum of Muncie; a granddaughter, Hanna Nicole Applegate of Eaton, Ind.; a sister, Dorothy Slone of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Rosie Applegate of Yorktown; a brother-in-law, George Ware of Yorktown; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, all of whom she loved dearly and thought of as her own, including Ed and Debbie Ware of Muncie, Jennifer Cox (Tim) and children of Fortville, Ind., and Holly Luzadder (Mark) and children of New Castle, Ind.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Mares of Anderson, Ind., and his staff for the extraordinary care given to Pauline during the past few years. With God’s grace and your skills we were given more time with her. Also, thanks to the sixth-floor nurses, technicians and staff of St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital for the loving care and support each and every time she was there. All of you brought smiles to her face even in the darkest times.

A celebration of Pauline’s life will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Yorktown Church of the Nazarene by Pastor Marty Ballard. Burial will be in Yorktown Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Gant Funeral Home in Yorktown.

Memorials may be sent to Yorktown Church of the Nazarene, 9001 W. Arch St., Yorktown, IN 47396.
