RUSSELL — Betty Marie Roberts, 88, of Russell, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland with her family by her side.

Betty was born Jan. 27, 1925, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Joseph and Blanche Gibson Wood.

Mrs. Roberts worked at C.H. Parsons Co. for many years and retired from there in 1975. She also worked for Ashland Oil for many years before retiring from Parsons. She was part of the N&M Candy store, where she thoroughly enjoyed working with her dear friends and neighbors, Mary Conley and Naomi Hillman. Betty was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Russell. She enjoyed hobbies such as cooking, crafts, baking, the Flatwoods local doll club and sewing. She was a loving mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She particularly enjoyed her holidays and Sunday afternoons with her extended family, the Belchers, “Rosemary’s family,” in addition to summer and Christmas events with Jack and Faye Taylor and family.

Mrs. Roberts had a great opportunity to travel with her husband to Iran during the summer of 1972, where she taught English to the Iranian military.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth B. Roberts, in 2010.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her loving son, Kenneth E. (Sue) Roberts of San Antonio, Texas, and James (Rosemary) Roberts of Russell; and two grandchildren, Josh and Jason Roberts of San Antonio. She will also be sadly missed by her extended family, cousins, friends and neighbors.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Carman Funeral Home-Russell, with words of comfort by Pastor Ken Gowin and Roger McCaleb. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends and family may call after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Road, Ashland, KY 41101.
