CATLETTSBURG — Virginia Tyree Clarkson, 79, of Catlettsburg, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mrs. Clarkson was born Feb. 13, 1935, in West Liberty, a daughter of the late Everett H. and June F. Johnson Tyree. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Henderson Clarkson II; a grandson, Samuel Craycraft; a brother, James E. Tyree; and sisters Louise Ranker and Jesse Hearne.

Virginia received her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University, she taught for the Russell School system from 1961 to 1962, and later retired from the Boyd County School system, where she taught for 33 years. After retiring she taught at the Calvary Christian School from 1999 to 2004. She enjoyed making afghans, which she donated to Two Hearts. She enjoyed playing piano, writing music and poetry and was an expert on English Victorian novelists. She was an elder and the church musician at the First Presbyterian Church of Catlettsburg.

Surviving are four daughters, Lillian (Keith) Craycraft and June (Jim) Swinford, both of Catlettsburg, Margaret (Rick) Fry, of Monroe, N.C., and Sarah Clarkson of Catlettsburg; eight grandchildren, Adam (Anna) Swinford, Faith (Jesse) Lyons, Sarah Swinford, Levi Swinford, Meghann Fry, Jacob Rosenbalm, Lauren Craycraft and Kelly Craycraft; four great-grandchildren, Ada, Devon, David and Jesse; and a sister, Dr. Betty Osiek of St. Peters, Mo.

The funeral service for Mrs. Clarkson will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church of Catlettsburg, at 26th and Broadway Street. Pastor Richard Brown will officiate. Final rest will be in the Clarkson Family Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.
