The Rev. Curtis John McComis - 1920-2013

ASHLAND — The Rev. Curtis John McComis, 93, of Ashland, passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at his home.

He was born Oct. 27, 1920, in Ashland, the son of the late Marion Sullivan McComis and Carrie Edna McComis. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Charlotte McComis.

He retired from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons, as chief of mechanical services from 1946 to 1970. He was a World War II Navy veteran who served on the USS Tuscaloosa and the USS Wisconsin in the South Pacific from 1939 to 1945. He was a Southern Baptist minister from 1950 to 2006, serving as pastor of the following churches: first pastor of Ashland’s Rose Hill Baptist Church, 1954 to 1959; First Southern Baptist Church in Terre Haute, Ind., 1960 to 1964; Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Springfield, Mo., 1964 to 1967; and Belmont Baptist Church in Ashland, 1967 to 2006. He was a member of Rush Masonic Lodge 715, F&AM, for 65 years and was a 32nd-degree Mason. Curtis was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Wanda Branham McComis; a son, Curtis Michael McComis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Carrie McComis Brown and husband C.R. of Huntington W.Va.; a stepson, Roy Brent Cox and wife Vonda of Ashland; two sisters, Geneva Mullins of Louisville and Susan Frazier of Florida; a brother, Bernard McComis of San Marino, Calif.; and a grandson, Evan Cox of Ashland.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Stan Williams. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park, with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. by Rush Masonic Lodge, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dana Branham, Evan Cox, C.R. Brown, Robert Wesley III, Riley Branham and Steve Manning.
