James Edwin Johnson - 1938-2013

ASHLAND — James Edwin Johnson, 75, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

He was born May 14, 1938, in Ashland, a son of the late Walter and Blanche Crosby Johnson.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Johnson; brothers Walter Johnson Jr. and Albert Johnson; and sisters Sidney Johnson and Connie Johnson Reed.

He was a member of Christ Temple Church in Ashland, American Legion Post 90, the Ironton AMVETS and the NAACP. He was considered a civic leader. He helped found the Martin Luther King marches in Ashland and the Booker T. Washington Festival. He retired as a heavy-equipment operator with the Kentucky Department of Highways. He formerly worked as a policeman in Oakland, Calif., and in general construction in Lexington.

Survivors include his loving wife, Rebecca Conway Johnson of Ashland; sons Dwayne Johnson of Vancouver, Wash., Stanley (Jennifer) Johnson of Takoma, Wash., Walter Johnson of Seattle, Wash., and Lionell Johnson of Hawaii; daughters Vickie Johnson of Seattle, Duanna Johnson of Ashland, Sidney Troxler of Misawa, Japan, and Portia Martinez of Jacksonville, Ariz.; brothers Charles Johnson of Los Angeles and Jerry Johnson of Flatwoods; sisters Eleanor Johnson and Frances Fisher of Ashland; 35 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Christ Temple Church by Elder Calvin Bradley. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East, where military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Steen Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
