Mildred Gillespie, 88, of Ashland, passed away Oct. 3, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was born Feb. 28, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa.
After working for the Department of Defense during World War II, Mildred moved to Ashland as a newlywed in 1944. She was a devoted member of Holy Family Church, where she volunteered at both the church and the school. In 1948, she and her husband, Bill, hosted the Holy Family Prom at their home on Bath Avenue. She provided a loving household for her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family through the years. Mildred was especially known as a wonderful cook who loved to host holiday parties for her family and friends, and always made everyone feel welcome. Unfortunately, Mildred and Bill’s home was destroyed by a fire in March 2011, but the wonderful memories of their family gatherings will live on for decades to come.
She was preceded in death by Bill, her loving husband of 66 years.
She is survived by three children, David (Martha) Gillespie of Ashland, Heather (John) Van Deren of Bellefonte and Tom (Missy) Gillespie of Chicago; 10 grandchildren, Bridget (Christopher) Kolb of Louisville, Annie (Kyle) Robinson of Ashland, Brian (April) Gillespie of Pine Ridge, Tommy Gillespie of Washington, D.C., William and Joseph Van Deren of Bellefonte and Patrick, Ryan, Colin and Grant Gillespie of Chicago; six great-grandchildren, Thomas and Eli Kolb, Finn and Harper Robinson and Benny and Case Gillespie; her sister, Mary (Bill) Coe, and their sons, Bill and Tim of Philadelphia; a niece, Lynne (Jeff) Canon of Williamsburg, Va.; and a nephew, Jim Pypelink of New York, N.Y.
