Dr. Franklin Mayer Mangrum - 1925-2013

LEXINGTON — Dr. Franklin Mayer Mangrum, 88, of Lexington, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, in Lexington.

He was born June 1, 1925, in Graves County. Frank was the oldest son of the late Louis Varon and Harriet Elizabeth Mayer Mangrum.

Frank was a World War II veteran who served during the last six months of the European Campaign that ended in May 1945. He joined the Army in May 1944 and received an honorable discharge in April 1946.

Frank graduated from Lowes High School in Graves County in 1944. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1949 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1957.

Frank belonged to the American Philosophical Association and the Kentucky Philosophical Association, where he was a founding member and made a number of conference presentations for both organizations. He was also a member of Metaphysical Society of America and the national and Kentucky education associations. His other memberships were at First Baptist Church in Morehead, transferring his membership to Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington, where he attended until his death, and the Morehead Men’s Club for more than 30 years.

Frank began his teaching career at Shimer College in Illinois in 1957. In 1959, he came to Morehead State College to establish a philosophy department. Frank was a member of the faculty committee that established the honors program in 1960. He also served as a faculty adviser to the Philosophy Club.

Frank had the honor of serving as the first faculty representative to the Morehead State University Board of Regents. After 36 years as a full-time professor, he retired in 1995, but he continued to teach part time at MSU for four years. He ended a 40-year career at MSU in May 1999.

Frank was also preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Graves Mangrum, in March 1988; a sister, Leona Mangrum Carrico; and two brothers, Louis V. Mangrum and James H. Mangrum.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Duggan Mangrum; stepchildren James Randall (Shannah) Click of Lexington and Amanda Click Pittman of Georgetown; stepgrandchildren Kyla, Logan, Hailey and Aiden Click and Aubrey Pittman; Nancy’s Shih Tzu, his best friend, Lucy Lou; a sister, Glenda Mangrum (Gene) Puckett of Mayfield; a brother, Curtis R. (Diana) Mangrum of Lombard, Ill.; sisters-in-law Mary Duggan of Dunwoody, Ga., and Nancy Miller Mangrum of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank was a kind and generous man to all who knew him, but especially to his wife and family, whom he loved above all else. He was known by everyone as a true gentleman.

The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home in Morehead by the Rev. Don Mantooth. A private burial will be in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in St. Louis.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. George Luckey, Dr. David Sexton, Dr. Gene Duncan, Dr. Nelson Grote, Michael McGuire and John Collis.
