Veronica Gleichauf Thistle 1918-2013

ASHLAND — Veronica Gleichauf Thistle, 94, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2013, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

She was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Ironton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Carl Joseph and Hilda Mantz Gleichauf.

Veronica graduated in 1937 as salutatorian of her class at St. Joseph High School in Ironton.

She worked for 39 years at Ashland Oil Incorporated. She was executive secretary of J. Howard Marshall for four years. She was a member of Ashland Arcoettes Girls Club. She was also an active member of Bellefonte Garden Club. She was a longtime member of Holy Family Church.

She was married to James F. Thistle in 1950 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ironton.

After her retirement, she was a volunteer at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Auxiliary for 15 years and King’s Daughters and Sons Home for the Aged for 20 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James F. Thistle; brother, Carl E. Gleichauf; and sister, Clara Handley Houlihan.

Survivors include her brother, Joseph A. Gleichauf of Huntington, W.Va.; sister, Jutta Gleichauf of Rochester, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Dovie Gleichauf of Ironton and Mary Lois Robinson of Sistersville, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at Holy Family Church by Father John P. Noe and the Rev. Father Tobasis Sabarian on Monday, April 1, 2013. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m.  Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
