Virgil Glenn Adkins, 86, of Kenova, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington.
He was born Aug. 16, 1927, in Huntington, to the late Delbert and Gladys Gifford Adkins. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Thelma Slayton and Iris Basenback.
Virgil was a member of Kenova United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He worked at GATX, National Mine Service Co. and Calgon Carbon, Catlettsburg Plant. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in 1945 and 1946. He enjoyed playing golf and was skilled in woodworking and gardening; tomatoes and cucumbers were his favorite handouts. What he was well-known for was being a loving neighbor, co-worker and family man. Many called him friend.
The family that will dearly miss him are his wife of 61 years, Ella Mae Shannon Adkins; his son, Randy Adkins and wife Rhonda of Beckley; his dearly loved grandchildren, Matt Adkins and wife Jessica of Huntington, Erin Collins and husband Josh of Kenova and Sean Adkins, also of Huntington; his great-granddogs; and his loving siblings, sisters Rose Barbour of Lexington, Ky., and Annise Berry of Chesapeake, Ohio, and brothers Delbert Lee Adkins and wife Joy of Sevierville, Tenn., and Sam Adkins and wife Louise of Kenova. Virgil’s many nieces and nephews have also known his love and care.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kenova United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jim Richards leading worship. Burial will be in Spring Valley Memory Gardens.
Friends may call after noon Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the church.
