Ida Lowe - 1933-2013

FLATWOODS — Ida Lowe, 80, of Flatwoods, wife of Douglas Lowe, passed away Monday morning, July 29, 2013, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

Ida was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Greenup County, a daughter of the late McKinley Reffett Sr. and Mildred Hughes Reffett.

Ida was also preceded in death by four brothers, Everett Reffett, James Reffett, Willis Reffett and Bill Reffett; and three sisters, Rose Brown, Amanda Thompson and Zola Reffett.

Ida was a retired office manager at the Russell Kroger and a business owner of LoweCo in Flatwoods. She loved her garden and antique cars.

Ida Lowe, a simple woman from a simple background, true to herself and her family through 80 years of life, never lost sight of who she was and the value of her family. Ida, through force of will and a work ethic second to none, was able to nobly fill the then- unfillable shoes of her beloved mother, Mildred. Ida, upon the death of her mother, was unquestionably the matriarch and guiding light of her family. She led with a dignity and humbleness that belied her success. She, through this life, loved none more than her beloved Dougie, and her ever vigilant and equally hard-working husband, Doug. As little more than a girl herself, she provided shelter and love to her sister, friend and confidant, Bug. In her passing we are able to look back on her life and view it as one of exceptional success as a wife, mother, sister, matriarch and businesswoman.

Ida is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Douglas Lowe of Flatwoods; a son Paul Douglas “Doug” Lowe (Carolyn) of Flatwoods; two brothers, McKinley Reffitt Jr. (Lucille) of Bellefonte and Gary Emory Reffett (Katrina) of Greenup; three sisters, Helen Caudill of Flemingsburg, Joann Bauman (Kenneth) of Cincinnati and Nancy Stafford (John) of Ashland; two very special grandchildren, Victoria Lowe and Parker Lowe; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Greenup Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack Edwards. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Aug. 1, 2013, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood and an hour before services Friday at the church.

Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made in Ida’s memory to a favorite charity.
